Phlebotomy Training Certification Requirements for Top Five Salary States

California

• High school graduate or GED
• Must be at least 18 years of age
• 20 hours basic & 20 hours advanced classes
• 40 hours of internship in a clinical facility
• 50 successful venipunctures plus 10 on real patients

New York

New York State has no requirements for licensing, certification, testing or examinations in order to practice this clinical profession.

Massachusetts

This state has no requirements for licensing, certification, testing or examinations in order to practice this clinical profession. All students’ need, is to take two classes assigned three college credits, and a practical phlebotomy training course, interning in a certified clinical environment.

Washington DC

This district requires achieving certification in order to practice phlebotomy. A graduate of an accredited training school can pass the phlebotomy certification examination, or can qualify to take the examination after six months of on the job training under academic supervision.

Connecticut

• High school graduate or GED
• Must be at least 18 years of age

This state has no requirements for licensing, certification, testing or examinations in order to practice this clinical profession. In order to compete for phlebotomy jobs, many prospective employers in the state do require completion of an accredited phlebotomist training program, and passing a certification examination.

Phlebotomist Training And Clinical Experience

Most if not all academic phlebotomy training programs may require that the clinical portion or internship be completed at a facility approved under the guidelines of the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment of 1988

This amendment passed by the Congress in 1988 established quality standards for all laboratory testing to bring into compliance the accuracy, the reliability and the timeliness of patient test results no matter where the test was being conducted. The primary objective was, to ensure quality laboratory testing from coast to coast.

There is no doubt that ease of entry for this occupation can be achieved in just about every state, and in most major metropolitan centers as well.
